Fred V. Gainer a former principal, teacher and coach in the Laurel School District, Laurel, DE, died February 3, 2014 at 2:45p.m.
He was born June 24, 1928 in Latonia, the son of the late Lee and Ola Whiting Gainer. He was one of ten children. He was preceded in death by his siblings Eldred, Harold, Merrill, Scott, Lynn, Ronnie and two sisters. He is also preceded in death by half-brothers, Blair, Harley, Tom, and Lloyd. His wife passed on December 13, 2013, they were married for 64 years and where reunited in Heaven on their anniversary day.
Fred is survived by his two sons, Frederick Lee and David Lynn of Laurel; and one daughter, Anna Maria Gainer Pierson of Bridgeport. He has four grandchildren, Jason Gainer, Jessica Gainer, Justin Gainer and Briar Patterson. He has four great grandchildren, Ivy Gainer, Mackenzie Gainer, Layla Gainer and William Patterson.
Fred is also survived by one brother, James Gainer of Elyria, OH.
Fred received his B.S. Degree from Glenville State College, and his Masters of Science from the University of West Virginia in Morgantown.
Mr. Gainer taught and coached at St. Marys, for ten years, coming to Lord Baltimore, Ocean View, DE for one year. He then moved to Laurel, DE and remained there for twenty five years as teacher, coach, assistant principle and principle. He retired in 1989 after being principal at Laurel High School for his last thirteen years.
At Fred's request, there will be no formal or memorial service. It will be a quiet family affair. Arrangements were in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home Laurel, DE. Interment was held in the Stalnaker Cemetery in Glenville.
