Frances Myers Schmetzer, 91, of Covenant Woods in Mechanicsville, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2014.
She is survived by her three children, Peggy Schmetzer, Charlie Schmetzer (Susan), and Marie Pisecki (Jerry); five grandchildren, Katie Grey (Douglas), Anna Schmetzer, George Schmetzer, Zachary Pisecki, and Harrison Pisecki; two siblings, Jane Kee (Carlyle) and William M. Myers (Mary Ellen).
She is predeceased by her parents Charles E. and Olive S. Myers, her sisters, Olive M. Wolters and Mary M. Vitale, her daughter, Karen L. Schmetzer, and husband, William M. Schmetzer.
Fran Schmetzer earned her B.A. degree from Glenville State College in West Virginia in 1943 and received a Master's of Religious Education from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in 1944.
She was Director of Christian Education in various churches, taught school for 20 years, and retired from Reader's Digest after 13 years as an index librarian. After her retirement, Fran returned to Glenville where she was an Elderhostel Coordinator, served as a member of the Glenville State College Board of Governors for five years, and wrote a weekly column for the Glenville Democrat/Pathfinder for six years, publishing a collection of her columns in Musings of an Oldtimer. She served on the State Folk Festival committee and received multiple awards for her years of community service.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Salem Presbyterian Church in Studley, VA. Reception to follow.
