A prominent local businesswoman and civic leader has been named to an important honorary position.
The Gilmer County Democratic Executive Committee is pleased to announce that Sandra Moyers Pettit has been selected as the "2013 Distinguished Gilmer County Democrat of the Year!"
Sandy first became involved in politics at the age of 17 while assisting with the campaign of Governor John D. Rockefeller IV for his second term and every since then, has been a dedicated Democrat.
According to committee members, Sandy is the engineer of the organization. She diligently works for Gilmer County and the Democrat Party on the local and state level.
As Gilmer's Democrat of the Year, she will be honored at the 28th Annual Jefferson Jackson Celebration to be held on Sat., Oct. 12, at the Charleston Civic Center. Vice President Joe Biden will be the key note speaker.
A life-long resident of Gilmer County, Sandy is the daughter of Mary Jo Moyers and the late Bailey W. Moyers and has one sibling, Karen Moyers Elkin (Gilmer County Circuit Clerk). She is married to Rodney Pettit and they have one daughter, Sydney Pettit.
Sandy is a graduate of Gilmer County High School and Glenville State College with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. She is also a graduate of WV Wesleyan College where she earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration.
She has been employed by WACO OIL & Gas Co., INC. since 1984. In addition to this full-time position, she is an adjunct faculty member for Glenville State College, Salem International University and WV Wesleyan College.
Sandy is very civic-minded and has served on the Gilmer County Ambulance Board (past chairman), GCEDA Board Member, GCHS LSISC Committee (past chairman), Little Kanawha River Parkway Authority, Gilmer Co. Democrat Women’s Association, Glenville State College Foundation Board and Business Management Program Advisory Board. She is a member of the Dusk Camp Baptist Church.
