A prominent Gilmer Countian succumbed Monday morning one week ago.
Billy Burke passed away on May 22, 2017 at 89 years of age. He left behind a great life and legacy working as a coal miner, glass worker, ship yard employee, heavy equipment operator and supervisor (for Williams Bros, the largest pipeline construction company in the world), river and tug boat pilot on the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay, hardware retailer, motel owner and operator, real estate developer and owner, trucking company owner, coal mine owner and operator, and legislator; which he wrote about in an autobiography covering his life from birth until age 82.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the Sand Fork Baptist Church, Sand Fork, WV. Visitation will be from 3-5 PM with a service celebrating the life of Billy Burke at 5:00 p.m. followed immediately by dinner in the Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, Billy requested that donations be made to the GSC Foundation for the Burke Scholarship Fund, c/o Glenville State College Foundation, 200 High Street, Glenville, WV 26351 or the Sand Fork Harmony Cemetery, c/o Richard Burke, PO Box 310, Sand Fork, WV 26430.
With great kindness, Billy has donated his well-used body to the “Advancement of Mankind” at the WVU Health Sciences Center.
