PHOTO CAPTION: A Get Together - (front row, l to r ) Geraldine Marks, Luanne (Miller) Conrad, Betty (Whitesel) Cross, (back row, l to r) Carl Conrad, Betty's son Steven and Doug Carpenter.
This picture was taken at my house in Aug. of 2011. Douglas Carpenter had not been able to attend the '46 class dinner held at daughter Marina and son-in-law Roger Stewart's in May and when Carl, Betty and Luanne found that Douglas would be in Gilmer Co. in Aug. we planned a get together.
These were all 1946 Normantown graduates, except for Steven Cross who was Betty's driver for the day. Carl and Doug were both members of that famous 1946 NHS State Champs basketball team. Doug was the team manager and Carl was a member of the team.
This week's column is hard to put into words. Last Thurs. I attended the funeral of cousin, friend and classmate Luanne Conrad. Carl and Luanne and I have several connections. Luanne and I both share he same great grandparents, Sylvester and Annetta (Rogers) Minney. My grandpa Ira (Papa" to children and grandchildren) and Luanne's mother, my Great Aunt Oe (Minney) Miller were brother and sister. Carl and I share the same grandparents, Flemming and Bertha (Hamric) Allen and we also were schoolmates our four high school years. Carl and I were cousins before he and cousin Luanne were married.
Luanne and Carl had a cabin near Rosedale and often visited me when visiting their cabin. I am really going to miss Luanne. A few years ago, some of Ralph's relatives passed away in Elyria, OH and Luanne called and invited us to stay with them. We sure enjoyed our visit. We were treated like Royalty. She made hot biscuits and sausage gravy for breakfast for us.
Luanne was our 1946 class correspondent. Each year, class members usually got a letter from Luanne updating us on happenings in the lives of our classmates. We really enjoyed her news letters.
Luanne, according to her obituary, was the organizer and editor of the G.C. Miller Family Almanac for 40 years. I am honored to own a few of those books and enjoy them a lot. In fact, I have used some of the stories in my column. I attended Luanne's Gilmer Co. viewing and her graveside services. I often heard Mom, Uncle Ressie and Aunt Cressie speak of Luanne's older brothers and sisters and I met some of their descendants at the viewing.
The Rosedale Senior Center and friends and relatives of Carl and Luanne served dinner to their family, friends and relatives after the funeral. Luanne and Carl often talked about how much they enjoyed eating at the Rosedale Senior Center when at their cabin. We all had a good visit with them. Thanks, Senior Center.
On Sun. before Christmas, after attending Church, my family got together for Christmas dinner and a gift exchange. After dinner I was called into the kitchen and daughter Jo Ann produced a Dairy Queen birthday cake and I had a surprise birthday party. I posed with each family group present behind the "Kitchen Table" but the pictures haven't been developed yet. We had another surprise, former son Mike's wife Shiela, Mike and her son Matthew and his wife Teresa drove from Huntington and Ironton, OH to attend Christmas with us. I missed the early deadline with my Christmas column so my column was missing one week. We have had some real bad weather but our calendar says our days will be getting longer.
I now have a new almost blank journal to fill up. I hope all entries in it will be happy ones.
